The functioning of the Tandem Operation

1. Description:
During a tandem skydive; the tandem passenger is connected to the front of the Tandem Instructor. The instructor and passenger are each wearing a parachute harness. The passenger's harness is attached in four places to the front of the instructors harness; something that easily takes place in the aircraft shortly before time of exit. The instructor, therefore, wears the student passenger on the front and the parachute on his back.

After leaving the aircraft, the instructor deploys a small round "drogue" parachute to keep the tandem falling at the average freefall rate of approximately 120 mph.

Tandems fall in a belly to earth position to an altitude of between five and six thousand feet above the ground where the parachute is then deployed.

The 120 mph blast of wind is suddenly gone, and the instructor and student can verbally communicate. Steering the canopy, adjusting the harness for comfort, practicing landing techniques and learning about canopy control all take place during the four to five minute ride to a soft landing ON THE TARGET.

The resulting adrenaline rush keeps a smile on the new skydiver's face for quite a while. One single jump will keep those eyes looking skyward for WEEKS afterward!!!

2. The Briefing:
After an approximately 25 minute flight, you will leave the Aircraft, securely connected to your Tandem Instructor for a 30 second freefall from 10 000 feet above the ground. The parachute will then be deployed at an altitude of about 5 000 feet. Once the parachute has opened and you have been made comfortable by your instructor, the landing will be practiced once or twice. After a four to five minute ride under an open Parachute your Tandem Instructor will safely and softly land ON THE TARGET.
